You may have noticed a new event on our Fall 2013 calendar, Tuesdays With TED, and we at TRiO are very excited to provide you with this opportunity!  You may be asking yourself,  What exactly are Tuesdays with TED?  Well, this is a monthly TRiO Center brown bag lunch series (meaning you bring your food to our center, we’ll provide the entertainment).  Tuesdays with TED are meant to serve as a mid-day break from your studies and work.  We will come together to watch and listen to “ideas worth spreading” from the highly acclaimed TED Talks, representing some of the world’ most inspiring voices.

To give you some background, TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design.  Since then, the organization has broadened its scope through two annual conferences and multiple talks throughout the country during the year. TED conferences and talks bring together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes or less).  These talks are then made available on the Internet for free access and viewing.  Previous speakers have been well-known, including Bill Clinton and Bill Gates; college students just like yourself; and exotic (one TED talk was done by a squawking parrot named Einstein); and have ranged in topics ranging from dog training, magic, robots, the origin of language, and the science of love.

Tuesdays with TED meetings will take place throughout the school year on Tuesdays at 12pm (noon) in the TRiO Center. Our first event is  Tuesday, October 1st. TRiO will show the video, “How to Live Before You Die (& not spend your life hating what you do)” on the big screen in TRiO. This particular talk was given by Apple creator Steve Jobs as the Stanford commencement address of 2005.  It was not originally a TED talk, but is now part of their series and is one of their most popular videos.  It is a truly inspiring talk about careers.  Whether you know exactly what you want to do, or feel completely lost, this is sure to move you in some way.  After the video, we will have a short discussion about what we viewed.  Look for Tuesdays with TED throughout the semester.  We hope to see you there!

Please join us for a new way to view the world with leaders that will broaden our minds and lift our spirits from the stories, advice, and laughter they share.
